Suivante, soubrette, femme de chambre :
• Tout était tranquille un jour dans l'auberge de l'écu de France, à Bourg-en-Bresse, quand un grand roulement se fit entendre, et qu'on vit paraître une superbe berline, forme anglaise, à quatre chevaux, remarquable surtout par deux très-jolies abigaïls qui étaient juchées sur le siège du cocher, bien ployées dans une ample enveloppe de drap écarlate, doublée et brodée en bleu.

Prononc. — La seule transcription de ce mot est celle de LITTRÉ : a-bi-ga-ïl.
Étymol. ET HIST. — 1825 « femme de chambre » (Brillat-Savarin, cf. sém.).
Empr. à l'angl. abigail subst. fém. « suivante, servante » dep. 1671 (John Eachard ds ODEE :a cousin Abigail to wait upon his lady), de Abigail, nom de la suivante dans The Scornfull Lady, pièce de Beaumont et Fletcher, 1610, du nom d'une des épouses de David, roi d'Israël, peut-être p. allus. à l'expr. Ta servante fréq. dans le récit I Samuel XXV, 1-44; terme bien implanté en angl. : cf. to abigail « rendre service », 1654, ODEE, abigailship « condition de servante » 1803, NED; dans ex. de Brillat-Savarin, la précision forme anglaise est à rapprocher de l'orig. de abigail. Hébr. , littéralement « mon père se réjouit », formé de l'hébr. « père » et « se réjouir » (KLEIN Etymol. t. 1., s.v.).
